By age 3, when Manuel\u2019s tantrums became more frequent, she wanted help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted him to be prepared for when he entered preschool,\u201d said Vasquez. \u201cI wanted him to learn about socializing. He was having many tantrums.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vasquez enrolled in the Parents as Teachers Children with Special Needs program, funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/regions\/pima-north\/\">First Things First Pima North Regional Partnership Council<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program provides a parent educator who visits the home to assess children for developmental milestones and delays. The parent educator also provides resources and teaches parents about healthy discipline, early childhood development and how to prepare their child for kindergarten. The program differs slightly from the regular Parents as Teachers program in that the parent educators are equipped to give greater support to children who are found to have moderate delays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Home Visitation Programs<\/p>\n<p>A free program that provides 1-on-1 help for parents of young children and expectant moms in the convenience of your own home.<\/p>\n<p>Find similar programs near you<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf children have a moderate delay, they often fall through the cracks,\u201d said Megan Wills, chief community programs officer for Easterseals Blake Foundation\/Parents as Teachers. \u201cWhen kids start elementary school with these unaddressed minor delays, it affects their performance and experience in school. The parent educators have the expertise to navigate systems and support families with resources to help these children, so they can catch up before they start kindergarten.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karla Hernandez, a parent educator, visited Vasquez at her home in Tucson and assessed Manuel using an Ages and Stages Questionnaire to find that he had a moderate delay in social-emotional and fine motor development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hernandez started working with Vasquez on attachment with her son, using logical consequences for discipline and improving his nutrition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe worked on him expressing his feelings,\u201d said Hernandez. \u201cWe asked him to tell mom when he was happy, sad or mad. Then he started asking mom how she was feeling.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vazquez said she saw his tantrums decrease and his social skills improve.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cHe learned to follow instructions from other people other than mom and dad<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are having more positive interactions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For developing his fine motor skills, Hernandez gave Vasquez activities to do at their home using scissors, coloring, holding pencils and crayons and tracing his name and shapes. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vasquez dedicated an hour every day to sitting down with Manuel to do fine motor activities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe set goals for the entire family, including dad, who was also involved in joining in the activities,\u201d said Hernandez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also started to introduce reading times with him to expand his vocabulary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is very interested in making crafts, doing different activities, and he loves reading,\u201d said Vasquez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In six months, Hernandez reassessed Manuel using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire and found he had caught up in his development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it was time to go to preschool, Vazquez and her husband wanted Manuel to go to a Catholic preschool but couldn\u2019t afford the tuition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe school did an assessment with him,\u201d said Hernandez. \u201cHe scored so well, he got a scholarship to go to the preschool there.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now at age 4, Manuel is doing well in preschool and on his way to having a great start in kindergarten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FTF Pima North Regional Council funds the Parents as Teachers Children with Special Needs program that provides the family with a parent coach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":18,"featured_media":40473,"template":"","tags":[134,171],"class_list":["post-40439","family-stories","type-family-stories","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-home-visitation","tag-pima-north","regions-pima-north"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.8 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
