Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Jean Barton<\/span> has been selected as the 201<\/span>9<\/span> First Things First <\/span>Yavapai<\/span> Region<\/span><\/a> <\/span>Champ<\/span>ion for Young Children. <\/span><\/p>\n

The award is given to local champions who actively volunteer their time to raise public awareness of the importance of early childhood development and health. Champions spend a significant amount of time volunteering with FTF and building public awareness about the importance of early childhood issues. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Barton spreads FTF\u2019s messages about why talking, singing and reading to children starting from infancy makes a life-long difference in learning wh<\/span>enever she speaks to parents.\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Barton speak<\/span>s<\/span> to organizations about the importance <\/span>of early childhood development. <\/span><\/p>\n

In 2016, <\/span>Dr. Barton,<\/span> with the help of all <\/span>the <\/span>Rotary Clubs in the Verde Valley, led the expansion <\/span>of Dolly Parton\u2019s Imagination Li<\/span>brary<\/span> <\/span>from Sedona and Rimrock to the entire Verde Valley region<\/span>, <\/span>including Camp Verde and Cottonwood<\/span>. The Verde Valley Imagination Library<\/span>, which is managed by volunteers,<\/span> now sends a high-quality, age-appropriate book every month to the homes of 1<\/span>,<\/span>850 children <\/span>from <\/span>birth<\/span> to age <\/span>5. <\/span>She can sometimes be found dressed as the \u201cCat in the Hat\u201d and modeling for parents, book cuddling and reading to their children.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Barton worked to establish a <\/span>partnership agreement <\/span>so that the family of every baby born at <\/span>Northern Arizona Healthcare\u2019s Verde Valley Medical Center <\/span>has the opportunity to enroll<\/span> <\/span>their newborns<\/span> in the program<\/span>. They also receive <\/span>the first book, and <\/span>parents are told about the importance of reading to babies \u201cevery day because they are born learning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We recently caught up <\/span>with <\/span>Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Barton<\/span>, who <\/span>is a retired educator<\/span> and<\/span> pediatrician<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Question: Why do you feel early childhood development and health is important?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Answer<\/span>:\u00a0I believe that a child\u2019s experiences between <\/span>birth and age 5<\/span> are the foundation for their future life.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Everyone talks about the problems facing K-12 education w<\/span>hen we should be talking about b<\/span>irth-12 education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>We know that interactive talking, playing and reading starting in infancy wires the brain for language and future literacy.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We know that adverse social\/ emotional experiences in the first <\/span>five years profoundly<\/span> affects lifetime mental, physical and chemical health.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Parents of young children need all the help they can get. <\/span>Time and money are scarce. Sending parents carefully chosen, engaging children\u2019s books every month is a wonderful way to encourage the habit of reading together. <\/span><\/p>\n

Question: How do you suggest other people in your community get involved?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Answer<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Spread the message that investing in children starting at birth will help prevent the problems seen in school kids, teens and adults. <\/span>The societal and financial savings are enormous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Understand the issues facing the parents of young children in your community \u2013 stress, time, money, lack of extended family for support to name a few.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Avoid judging parents who are less than perfect. \u00a0Most are doing the best they can<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vote, volunteer and donate to organizations that help parents and young children<\/span><\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
