Bernie Kniffin<\/span> has been selected as the 201<\/span>9<\/span> <\/span>San Carlos Apache Region\u2019s<\/span><\/a> First Things First Champion for Young Children. <\/span><\/p>\n

The award is given to local champions who actively volunteer their time to raise public awareness of the importance of early childhood development and health. Champions spend a significant amount of time volunteering with FTF and building public awareness about the importance of early childhood issues. <\/span><\/p>\n

Kniffin <\/span>has<\/span> <\/span>helped raise awareness about the importance of early childhood by <\/span>d<\/span>istributing family g<\/span>uides at<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> Temporary<\/span> Assistance for Needy Families<\/span> <\/span>(TANF) program in San Carlos, <\/span>as well as <\/span>through <\/span>Transit Vans <\/span>so families are aware <\/span>of what types of early childhood <\/span>services are available to them<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>Kniffin <\/span>has also invited<\/span> FTF<\/span> <\/span>to speak at <\/span>the annual TANF c<\/span>onference <\/span>where<\/span> employees<\/span> <\/span>and<\/span> past and present clients<\/span> attended. <\/span><\/p>\n

We recently caught up with <\/span>Kniffin, who <\/span>is the director <\/span>of TANF\/Transit San Carlos Apache Tribe Nnee Bich\u2019o Nii <\/span>\u201cHelping<\/span> the People\u201d Services.<\/span><\/p>\n

Question: Why do you feel <\/span>e<\/span>arly <\/span>c<\/span>hildho<\/span>od development and health is <\/span>important? <\/span><\/strong>Answer<\/span>: <\/span><\/strong>Early childhood development and health is important as this involves the success of our children into adulthood. Educating our parents on good healthy habits can increase the benefits of our children to experience a higher platform of good health in relation to a good life. The promotion of Positive experience in early childhood supports the overall being of our children in becoming healthy adults.<\/span><\/p>\n

Q<\/span>uestion<\/span>: How do you suggest other people in your community get involved?
\n<\/span><\/strong>A<\/span>nswer<\/span>:<\/span> <\/span><\/strong>I suggest that the community needs to step up to the plate! Our program participated as an outreach agency for First Things First by becoming an ambassador for the program and making sure outreach wa<\/span>s happening from our TANF office. We created a c<\/span>hildren\u2019s corner with FTF materials in our TANF lobby to educate our community. We<\/span> also<\/span> were able to <\/span>distribute<\/span> information<\/span> on our public transit buses, while<\/span> on local routes. Also, we handed out FTF <\/span>parent information during <\/span>our San Carlos Apache Veterans Parade <\/span>in November. This is how we actively<\/span> involved our community.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
