First Things First\u2019s Amy Corriveau was a recent guest on Grand Canyon University\u2019s podcast for current and future teachers, Top of the Class.<\/p>\n

Corriveau, who is FTF\u2019s Chief Program Officer, spoke to podcast hosts, Emily Pottinger\u00a0and\u00a0Dr. Meredith Critchfield, about a variety of topics including what developmentally appropriate means, as well as tips for teachers and parents on how to establish a stable environment for young children, along with knowing when to ask for help.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Pottinger and Critchfield, who are professors in the university\u2019s College of Education, host the monthly podcast, which is available on iTunes, and is designed to inspire current and future teachers.<\/p>\n

Corriveau leads FTF\u2019s programming efforts, as well as collaborative efforts with other state agencies, industry groups, non-profit organizations and families to enhance learning opportunities for Arizona\u2019s babies, toddlers and preschoolers.<\/p>\n

Over two episodes, the conversation included Corriveau offering advice to parents to \u201ctake a few minutes every day and just enjoy your child.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it really like for a family? There are so many stressors,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes, if just for a few moments in the morning and evening, appreciate that child. That\u2019s the number one tip I would give a family.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also encouraged families to reach out for support.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we know is that families think they\u2019re being judged as parents or that there\u2019s something wrong if they don\u2019t know what to do inherently. There is truly nothing wrong with asking for help.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whether it\u2019s checking in with a pediatrician, calling the Birth to Five Helpline<\/a> or signing up for a parent education class, \u201cfind someone and ask for help when you need it,\u201d Corriveau said. \u00a0<\/p>\n
