Local school officials know that the early years matter, especially when it comes to early literacy, which starts <\/span>well<\/span> <\/span>before a child reaches a classroom. It begins before babies can talk and continues as <\/span>they become toddlers and preschoolers. <\/span>In fact, <\/span>gaps in children\u2019s vocabulary start to appear as early as 18 months. <\/span><\/p>\n By the time children are 3 and 4 years old their vocabulary, attention and general knowledge are predictors of <\/span>third<\/span>–<\/span> and fourth<\/span>–<\/span>grade <\/span>reading <\/span><\/span>comprehension. <\/span>According to the 2018 <\/span>AzMERIT<\/span> standardized test results, less than half (44%) of Arizona\u2019s third graders passed the English Language Arts test. <\/span><\/p>\n The reality that third<\/span>–<\/span>grade reading ability is one of the best predictors of high school graduation is something that elementary school principals see on a daily basis. <\/span><\/p>\n Language & Literacy<\/p>\n Studies show that children whose parents and caregivers regularly talk and read with them develop larger vocabularies and go on to become better readers and do better in school.
