It begins before babies can talk and continues as <\/span><span id=\"E102\">they become toddlers and preschoolers. <\/span><span id=\"E103\">In fact, <\/span><span id=\"E104\">gaps in children\u2019s vocabulary start to appear as early as 18 months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E106\"><span id=\"E107\">By the time children are 3 and 4 years old their vocabulary, attention and general knowledge are predictors of <\/span><span id=\"E109\">third<\/span><span id=\"E110\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E111\"> and fourth<\/span><span id=\"E112\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E113\">grade <\/span><span id=\"E114\">reading <\/span><span id=\"E116\" class=\"qowt-stl-CommentReference\"><\/span><span id=\"E118\">comprehension. <\/span><span id=\"E119\">According to the 2018 <\/span><span id=\"E121\">AzMERIT<\/span><span id=\"E123\"> standardized test results, less than half (44%) of Arizona\u2019s third graders passed the English Language Arts test. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E124\"><span id=\"E125\">The reality that third<\/span><span id=\"E126\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E127\">grade reading ability is one of the best predictors of high school graduation is something that elementary school principals see on a daily basis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Language &#038; Literacy<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that children whose parents and caregivers regularly talk and read with them develop larger vocabularies and go on to become better readers and do better in school. That\u2019s because the first few years of a child\u2019s life are when the brain grows and develops the most.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E129\">Recently<\/span><span id=\"E130\">, school<\/span><span id=\"E131\"> leaders from across Arizona <\/span><span id=\"E132\">shared<\/span><span id=\"E133\"> why <\/span><span id=\"E134\">they believe <\/span><span id=\"E135\">early literacy matters. <\/span><span id=\"E136\">Here are some of their thoughts:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nancy Branch, Kyrene de la Mirada Leadership Academy Principal in Chandler<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYear after year, we find that children who enter school with early literacy skills have a definite advantage that positively impacts their learning from the very start.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jodi Gunning, Litchfield Elementary School District Superintendent<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeaching very young children early literacy skills gives them an unshakable foundation for a lifetime of learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tony Rhineheart, Sequoia Village School Principal in Show Low<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is clear that we need to invest in developing readers with early interventions, quality instruction and literacy programs in the home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Marco Antonio Ruiz, Western Valley School Principal in Phoenix<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must reach our students from infancy to preschool by providing access to books and literacy resources, as well as educate our parents on the critical need to reinforce early literacy skills in the home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dawnafe Whitesinger, Dishchii\u2019bikoh Community School Director of Instructional Programs in Cibecue <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we help build strong, healthy children they will raise strong, healthy families, who will build strong, healthy communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lisa Raymond, Mary C. Young children who have listened to stories read or told by their parents start off school with an advantage.
