When people think of museums, they may think of hushed buildings filled with do-not-touch signs<\/span>.<\/span> But that stereotype is quickly changing as more museums reach out to the community and specifically invite families with young children. <\/span><\/p>\n

In the Phoenix area, <\/span>the nationally-recog<\/span>nized Heard Museum<\/a><\/span>, which is dedicated to advancing American Indian art,<\/span> joins other museums in finding more ways to welcome young children. Each year, the museum holds a family-friendly <\/span>Dia<\/span> de <\/span>los<\/span> <\/span>Ni\u00f1os<\/span> celebration at the end of April that features music, hands-on activities for kids and live performances, including storytelling. This year, First Things First partnered with the Heard Museum for the event. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s just one <\/span>way that the museum connects with families<\/span>,<\/span> said <\/span>Sharah<\/span> Nieto, the <\/span>m<\/span>useum\u2019s director of education. <\/span>\u201cI <\/span>have the privilege and pleasure of serving youth and their families on a daily ba<\/span>sis,” she said. “I love witnessing <\/span>parents engage their children with <\/span>i<\/span>ndigenous art and culture because I know it will have a lifelong impact on their child\u2019s appreciation for art and most importantly, <\/span>their <\/span>understanding of others.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Since young children learn best through play and experiences that use all their senses to interact with the world,<\/span> including<\/span> interactive displays a<\/span>t the museum is also important. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI <\/span>enjoy watching a child\u2019s expression when they use a pump drill to create the hole in a bead for the first time<\/span>,<\/span> or hearing their amazement when they create something new and unexpected<\/span>,\u201d Nieto said. \u201c<\/span>These moments and many others like it are the reasons why I believe that all kids and their adults should have opportunities to visit places like the Heard Museum.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Nieto, a former art teacher, also emphasizes that connecting with the arts can help children use their imagination. \u201cThese unique opportunities expose children to new experiences and create memories that <\/span>will<\/span> stay with them forever<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> she said. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Heard Museum recently expanded gallery space dedicated to families. The space is called<\/span> <\/span>\u201c<\/span>It\u2019s your Turn: Color!<\/span><\/a>\u201d and offers a place for families to explore together. They <\/span>can <\/span>play <\/span>w<\/span>ith light and shadow, arrange <\/span>bright<\/span> shapes into patterns or test<\/span> out their gross motor skills through a <\/span>variety of<\/span> hands-on activities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond the learning that can happen in this <\/span>space, t<\/span>hat shared time together interacting <\/span>and exploring <\/span>help<\/span>s<\/span> to strengthen parent-child relationships, <\/span>which <\/span>are the most important influences on early childhood brain development. <\/span> And that shared experience may be the greatest benefit to encouraging more families to visit museums with their young children. <\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
