It\u2019s a cute name with a serious mission \u2013 Summer Lunch Buddies is a statewide campaign which connects families with the many schools, <\/span>non-profit <\/span>organ<\/span>izations or local governments<\/span> across Arizona hosting no-cost summer meals for <\/span>kids 18 and younger<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Getting the word out to families is the focus of many community partners, including the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Arizona Department of Education. <\/span>For families with <\/span>toddlers and preschoolers<\/span>, First Things First wants them to <\/span>know th<\/span>at <\/span>free meals are also <\/span>open to those younger age groups<\/span>. This is especially important since more young children in Arizona live in poverty (27%) than their peers across the country (23%). In addition, about 1 in 4 children 17 and younger (23%) <\/span>live in households that are food insecure, which is defined as not having access to enough food for an active and healthy life. <\/span><\/p>\n

One of the <\/span>many <\/span>organizations<\/span> <\/span>participating in the summer meals program is <\/span>St. Mary\u2019s Food Bank<\/span>. <\/span> <\/span>The food bank <\/span>runs <\/span>Kids Caf\u00e9 at 160 sites throughout <\/span>six counties in <\/span>Arizona<\/span>. The sites are located as<\/span> far south as Eloy<\/span>, throughout<\/span> <\/span>Maricopa County<\/span> and<\/span> up to Kingman, Flagstaff and the Navaj<\/span>o Nation, said <\/span>Jose <\/span>Urteaga<\/span>, the community engagement manager at St. Mary\u2019s Food Bank.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

No matter where they live in the state, families can<\/span>\u00a0text the word FOOD to 877-877 and <\/span>they\u2019ll <\/span>be asked to respond with <\/span>their<\/span> <\/span>full address <\/span>to <\/span>receive <\/span>a list by tex<\/span>t of the <\/span>nearest summer meals site<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>The text service also includes the <\/span>days and hours that breakfast and lunch are served.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to make it easy for families to find out about the sites and go,\u201d <\/span>Urteaga<\/span> said. One of the best ways <\/span>the food bank<\/span> found to spread the information is through<\/span> word of mouth,<\/span> he<\/span> said<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>The <\/span>program\u2019s <\/span>Facebook<\/span> <\/span>page<\/span><\/a> makes it easy for people to share information with their informal networks. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you\u2019re not technically <\/span>savvy<\/span>, most people know Facebook,\u201d <\/span>Urteaga<\/span> said. <\/span><\/p>\n

They also want families to know that their children can receive a meal every day. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe want people to come in every single day,\u201d <\/span>Urteaga<\/span> said. \u201cLet\u2019s say we\u2019re serving at a community center, you don\u2019t have to have a specific reason for your kids to come by for a meal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And since the meals are on a two-week cycle, the food won\u2019t be repeated anytime during that cycle. A typical always has a dairy, grain, fruit, vegetable and protein. For example, it could be chicken sliders, a fruit cup, carrot sticks and milk. <\/span><\/p>\n

Last year, the food bank served more than 300,000 meals during the summer, and they have capacity to serve more, as long as children show up. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want any child to go without food,\u201d <\/span>Urteaga<\/span> said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Along with the text option, families can also visit <\/span>azhealthzone.org\/<\/span>summerfood<\/span><\/a> for meal locations and times.<\/span> <\/span>There is no cost and no registration is required. <\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
