While <\/span>Arizon<\/span>a was at the forefront in creating age-<\/span>segregat<\/span>ed<\/span> communities<\/span>, it <\/span>can <\/span>now <\/span>be a pioneer in <\/span>building community among generations, said <\/span>Marc Freedman<\/span>, a national expert on the changing face of retirement. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

And, often, that bridge between generations <\/span>begins by <\/span>emphasizing<\/span> that a focus on young children matters for all Arizonans, including those in retirement. <\/span><\/p>\n

Freedman is the<\/span> CEO <\/span>and founder of Encore.org<\/span>, which seeks to leverage the talent of people over age 50 by matching them with organizations that could benefit<\/span> from that experience, especia<\/span>lly those which work on causes for children and youth<\/span>. <\/span> H<\/span>e recently shared his perspective with an audience of community members at an event convened by Experience Matters<\/span>, an Arizona-based organization that works locally to connect experienced talent with nonprofits, help them transition to a new career or place them in volunteer service positions. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

First Things First\u2019s Chief Policy Advisor,<\/span>\u00a0Liz Barker Alvarez<\/span>,<\/span> participated in a panel discussion<\/span> at the <\/span>event<\/span>, discussing how various organizations <\/span>work to connect <\/span>younger and older generations. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe older generation understands how crucial the first five years (of a child\u2019s life) are,\u201d Alvarez said.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

FTF recruit<\/span>s<\/span> volunteers<\/span> across Arizona to ser<\/span>ve as<\/span> regional council members<\/a> on<\/span> FTF\u2019s 28 regional councils<\/span>. Alvarez shared that ab<\/span>out 10 percent of those council members are retired and another 10 percent of them are working in a second career. The<\/span> regional councils reflect the state\u2019s diversity and represent the array of Arizonans who have a stake in ensuring children arrive at kinderg<\/span>arten prepared to be successful.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
