From the moment a family enters the Early Childhood <\/span>Center<\/span> of Excellence<\/span>,<\/span> located in an historic school building in Douglas, they realize there is something very diff<\/span>erent about this health center.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he focus on children is clear from the beginning with a sign at the door declaring it a \u201cscreen-free zone<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>where parents are encouraged to put their phone in a plastic box <\/span>during their time at the clinic, to avoid the screen. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Instead<\/span>, families can ch<\/span>oose a book from the bookcases<\/span> that line the walls inside, where they can read to their child or the child can read to them, <\/span>or <\/span>check out a toy box, filled with age-appropriate toys that their child can play with. <\/span><\/p>\n

The First Things First state Board recently attended a tour and ribbon cutting for the opening of the Early Childhood Center of Excellence, which is a part of the Chiricahua Community Health Centers, Inc. The pediatric center focuses on children birth to age 11, especially children with special health care needs. <\/span><\/p>\n

FTF was recognized for funding the Early Childhood Optimal Health <\/span>(ECOH) <\/span>program, through the FTF Cochise Region<\/a>\u2019s Care Coordination Strategy<\/span>. The <\/span>program <\/span>provides<\/span> a registered nurse care manager to help families with children of special needs manage and coordinate medical visits between all specialists. The nurses are also available by cell phone to answer families\u2019 questions, such as investigating insurance denials or financial options, along with helping with the child\u2019s individualized care plans. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Darlene Melk, <\/span>Chiricahua director of Community Pediatrics and Medical Director of Southern Arizona Children’s Health Project, told the group that the center\u2019s programs, including ECOH, <\/span>offer<\/span> <\/span>a different way to deliver preventive care. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou have the time to develop a relationship with the families,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said Melk, who also serves on the FTF Cochise Regional Council. \u201cYou\u2019re <\/span>able<\/span> <\/span>to focus on the child and how to promote <\/span>their healthy development.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

There are parent support groups, organized around children\u2019s needs or age group, along with support to sign up for home visitation programs and dental <\/span>care. <\/span>Additional services offered at the center include: <\/span>pediatric acute and preventative care, enrollment in programs such as Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and <\/span>KidsCare<\/span>, integrated behavioral health, and dietetics. <\/span>U<\/span>nique<\/span> features of the center<\/span> continue the child-focused theme. For example,<\/span> <\/span>the <\/span>screen<\/span>–<\/span>free zone<\/span> declaration and the colorful, inviting <\/span>waiting areas that feature well-stocked<\/span> reading corners, developmental toy boxes<\/span> <\/span>and <\/span>volunteer<\/span> readers<\/span>. In addition, the center offers <\/span>many <\/span>support<\/span> groups and integrated dental care<\/span> services on-site.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Chiricahua\u2019s Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jonathan Melk<\/span>, shared <\/span>with <\/span>attendees<\/span> <\/span>his vision when <\/span>he <\/span>began<\/span> the pediatrics program in 2006.<\/span><\/p>\n
