Changes in how your baby looks or acts can be a sign that they are sick. Changes like these can be a reason to call their doctor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Loss of appetite, diarrhea or vomiting<\/li>\n<li>Pale skin or dark circles under the eyes<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss<\/li>\n<li>Temperature higher than 100.4\u00b0 F. This temperature is considered a fever. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/fever\/pages\/How-to-Take-a-Childs-Temperature.aspx\">Learn more<\/a> about how to take your baby&#8217;s temperature.<\/li>\n<li>Unusual drowsiness or fussiness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Always call<\/strong> the doctor or clinic if you are worried, or if your baby does not get better in 24 hours. Here are some times that you should call the doctor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If your baby is less than 3 months old and has a fever.<\/li>\n<li>If your baby is less than 2 months old and has a cough.<\/li>\n<li>If your baby has diarrhea or vomiting that doesn\u2019t stop. Give them plenty of liquids to avoid dehydration.<\/li>\n<li>If your baby has severe pain that doesn\u2019t stop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>If these things happen, call 9-1-1:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>If your child is breathing fast, wheezing or grunting, or has blue lips.<\/li>\n<li>If your baby\u2019s eyes or body are jerking or shaking uncontrollably (a seizure).<\/li>\n<li>If you can\u2019t wake your baby up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Healthy Hearing and Vision<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Parents are often the first to notice a problem with a baby\u2019s hearing or vision. These problems affect your baby\u2019s ability to learn, so it\u2019s important to have them checked out. Babies usually get hearing and vision screenings at certain well-baby visits, but you can ask for a screening any time. Many health insurance plans cover vision and hearing care. This includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azahcccs.gov\/Members\/GetCovered\/\">Medicaid<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azahcccs.gov\/Members\/GetCovered\/Categories\/KidsCare.html\">KidsCare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Help with Hearing Issues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow up if issues were found in your baby\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babyhearing.org\/universal-newborn-hearing-screening\">newborn hearing test<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Your baby might need a hearing screening if they don\u2019t react to loud sounds.<\/li>\n<li>Your baby might need a hearing screening if they don\u2019t respond when you say their name, after about 6 months old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Help with Vision Issues<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Your baby might need vision screening if their eyes turn in or out after 4 months, or if their eyes don\u2019t follow objects together.<\/li>\n<li>Regular vision screenings by your baby&#8217;s health care provider can find eye problems that don\u2019t have any symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>Children can also get an exam from an eye doctor to check for any vision problems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you need help getting an eye exam or glasses, contact <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infantsee.org\/?sso=y\">InfantSEE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vspvision.com\/cms\/vspglobal-outreach\/gift-certificates.html\">Sight for Students<\/a>, or <a href=\"http:\/\/lionsvisionhearing.org\/\">Arizona Lions Vision and Hearing.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about vision health at <a href=\"https:\/\/eyesonlearning.org\/\">Eyes on Learning<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38799 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sun-protection-650x421.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sun-protection-650x421.png 650w, https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sun-protection-768x497.png 768w, https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/sun-protection.png 1224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Staying Safe in the Sun<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Babies\u2019 small bodies can overheat very quickly, and their skin is prone to sunburn. When you are out getting fresh air together, use sun protection.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sunlight. Use a sunshade on your stroller and when sitting outside.<\/li>\n<li>Cover most of your baby\u2019s skin with lightweight, light-colored clothing. Shade their face with a hat that has a brim.<\/li>\n<li>Put sunscreen on your baby\u2019s exposed skin, but avoid their eyes. Choose a sunscreen made for babies. These use minerals like zinc oxide for protection.<\/li>\n<li>When the weather is very hot, stay inside with your baby.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your baby cool in their stroller or car seat. Don\u2019t use a blanket as a sun shade because it can trap heat.<\/li>\n<li>If your baby is bundled up, watch for signs that they are getting too warm. These include skin that feels sweaty or looks flushed.<\/li>\n<li>With car seats and strollers, watch out for plastic and metal parts that have gotten hot in the sun.<\/li>\n<li>Call 9-1-1 if your baby shows signs of overheating, including weakness, nausea or vomiting, dizziness or fainting, heavy sweating, a high temperature or fast breathing and heartbeat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>Giving Your Baby Healthy Air to Breathe<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Babies\u2019 small, growing lungs can be hurt by even small amounts of harmful chemicals in the air. Even some substances that adults don\u2019t mind breathing in can hurt babies\u2019 health. To give them clean air:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep all kinds of smoke out of your home. This includes candles, fireplaces and things that you smoke.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your baby indoors and close your windows if dust is blowing around outside or the air is smoky.<\/li>\n<li>Know what the air quality is in your area. Your baby may have a fever, be fussy or cry more than usual or pull on their ear when they have an ear infection.
