We use them in work, play and school. Children are also interested in these \u201ctoys\u201d at a very early age.\u00a0Try to protect babies and toddlers from screen time. They learn best from real-life play and conversations. As your child gets older, you may decide to allow her to use electronic devices. You can help her use these devices safely and wisely by setting limits and knowing how the devices are being used.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6452\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Tech-1.jpg\" alt=\"Children and Tech\" width=\"848\" height=\"429\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Set Limits on Screen Time<\/h2>\n<p>The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep children 18 months and younger away from TV, videos and computer games.<\/li>\n<li>Limit older children and teens to 1 or 2 hours of screen time a day.<\/li>\n<li>Keep TVs, computers and tablets out of your child\u2019s bedroom.<\/li>\n<li>Shut the TV off during dinner and when you\u2019re not watching it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learn more about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/2016\/12\/screen-time-recommendations-from-pediatricians\/\">screen time recommendations\u00a0<\/a>from the AAP.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Be a Role Model<\/h2>\n<p>If your child sees you watching TV or playing on your phone, she will want to do the same. Be a good role model for your child and limit your own technology use. The steps you take now will teach your child how to manage technology throughout her life.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>THINGS YOU CAN DO<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6451 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Tech-2.jpg\" alt=\"young children in a computer lab\" width=\"250\" height=\"281\" \/>Know What Your Child Is Watching<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t let your child see a show or use an app just because the ads look OK. Review it yourself and ask \u201cWhat will my child learn from this?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Talk about the ads you see. Help your child learn to say \u201cNo\u201d to advertising. To learn more, see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.commercialfreechildhood.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Get Involved<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Sit with your child as she explores a new app or program.<\/li>\n<li>Find apps and programs that make your child think, ask questions and discover new information.<\/li>\n<li>Do activities together, like calling grandparents with Skype, looking at digital photos and reading e-books.<\/li>\n<li>Learn about using technology to connect with your child from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.joanganzcooneycenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joan Ganz Cooney Center<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Use the Ratings<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a show\u2019s ratings to learn if it is suitable for your child\u2019s age.
