Start by setting a few simple guidelines, such as holding hands when walking across the street, and treating people and animals kindly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Guiding-toddlers.jpg\" alt=\"Guiding Toddlers\" width=\"848\" height=\"563\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>When Your Child Has a Tantrum<\/h2>\n<p>When your child has a tantrum, he needs your help to calm down. You may need to pick him up calmly and take him away from the problem. You can also try to distract him with something else to do. Some toddlers need a firm hug. And some do best with a few minutes in a \u201ccalming corner.\u201d After your toddler has calmed down, talk about what happened. Help him find other ways to express his feelings.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>Give Children Limited Choices<\/h2>\n<p>When children have choices, they feel more in control and get less frustrated. Let your child choose between wearing her blue or green socks, or eating an apple or a banana for a snack. Offer only 2 or 3 choices. Too many choices can confuse young children.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>THINGS YOU CAN DO<\/p>\n<h3>Setting Limits: Guidance and Discipline<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Be patient. It takes toddlers a long time to learn self-control.<\/li>\n<li>Be consistent. For example, always hold your child\u2019s hand when you cross the street.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that what you expect fits your child\u2019s age. For example, most toddlers will have toilet accidents.<\/li>\n<li>Tell and show your child what you want him to do. Be specific. \u201cDraw on the paper, not on the wall\u201d is better than \u201cStop that.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Criticize the behavior, not the child. \u201cDo not run into the street. You could get hurt!\u201d is better than \u201cYou are a bad boy!\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Help your child express her feelings in words, rather than hitting, kicking or screaming.<\/li>\n<li>Praise and hug your child for good behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Make your house safe, so you will not need to say \u201cNo\u201d all the time.
