Knowing the key elements of quality can help you make an informed decision when choosing a child care or preschool setting for your family.<\/p>\n<p>Quality early learning settings build on basic health and safety to include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teachers and caregivers who know how to work with infants, toddlers and preschoolers<\/li>\n<li>Positive, nurturing relationships that give young kids the individual attention they need<\/li>\n<li>Learning environments that encourage creativity and imaginative play<\/li>\n<li>Hands-on activities that stimulate and encourage positive brain connections in children<\/li>\n<li>Caregivers who provide regular feedback to parents on the development of their child<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All of these elements combined make a child care environment that prepares children for kindergarten.<\/p>\n<p>This checklist will help you recognize the key elements of quality and make a more informed decision when choosing a child care or preschool setting for your child.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>BEFORE YOU VISIT A CHILD CARE PROGRAM<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4>\u2610 Check the status of the provider\u2019s license or certification.<\/h4>\n<p>Quality begins with basic health and safety. Child care centers and home-based providers who serve five or more children for compensation are licensed and monitored by the Arizona Department of Health Services. (Settings where parents are on the premises are excluded). To find out if such a program\u2019s license is in good standing,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/azdhs.gov\/licensing\/index.php#azcarecheck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit the\u00a0Arizona Department of Health Services<\/a>. Providers on tribal lands or military bases may have their own licensing or certification requirements. Ask the provider for more information.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2610 Call the program director or child care home provider.<\/h4>\n<p>Some things to ask about:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hours of operation (evenings, weekends, holidays)<\/li>\n<li>Costs and available financial assistance and discounts<\/li>\n<li>Meals<\/li>\n<li>Transportation for children needing part-time care<\/li>\n<li>Policies regarding sick children and emergencies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>\u2610 Schedule an in-person visit.<\/h4>\n<p>If you\u2019re interested in learning more, let them know you\u2019d like to drop in to visit the site in person. Quality providers will welcome a visit from you and your child during normal hours of operation. You will want to see the children interacting with teachers and caregivers, so ask about particular times of day to avoid, such as early morning, late afternoon or nap time.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"content box-content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/QualityFirstCheckList_0423.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ftf_download_bloack-01-650x264.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"264\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-46491\" \/><\/a> <strong>AT YOUR VISIT \u2013 QUESTIONS TO ASK:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>\u2610 Do you have a parent handbook?<\/h4>\n<p>Quality programs should offer you a copy.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2610 What are the qualifications of the director and teachers? How long have they been working with children?<\/h4>\n<p>Experience working with infants, toddlers and preschoolers as well as training or college coursework in early childhood development and education lead to quality adult\/child interactions.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2610 How do you keep families informed about your program and their children\u2019s progress?<\/h4>\n<p>Quality centers will post lesson plans, send parents information such as a newsletter, host regular parent\/teacher conferences and keep you informed about your child\u2019s activities.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2610 What is your ratio of teachers to children? Maximum group size?<\/h4>\n<p>These determine the level of care and attention your child may receive. Time out is not effective in dealing with disruptive children.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><strong>AT YOUR VISIT \u2013 THINGS TO LOOK FOR:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h4>\u2610 Positive, nurturing teacher\/child interactions<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Does the teacher make eye contact with the children, smile and listen without interrupting?<\/li>\n<li>Is the teacher at eye level with the kids when they are interacting?<\/li>\n<li>Is the teacher interacting with children during activity times indoors and outdoors?<\/li>\n<li>Do you hear the kids talking more than the teacher?<\/li>\n<li>Does the teacher ask the children questions where they can give more than a yes\/no answer?<\/li>\n<li>Are the children supervised at all times?
