Or stop doing what you don\u2019t want them to.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re young kids, of course, still learning and developing, but it can be frustrating in the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Ask any of the wonderful, knowledgeable early childhood professionals who work with Arizona families with young children and they\u2019ll probably tell you that the question they\u2019re asked the most is some version of:<\/p>\n<p><em>How do I get my child to stop<\/em> <em>[insert challenging behavior here]?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll also tell you that there\u2019s no simple answer or surefire solution to these <em>How<\/em> questions. But it might help to ask a different question first:<\/p>\n<p><em>Why?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe not, \u2018How do I do it?\u2019 but, \u2018Why are they doing it?\u2019\u201d advises Elizabeth Santiago, director of the United Way of Pinal County\u2019s family, friend and neighbor program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is the big emotion behind the behavior? What is the child feeling?
