It could be current events or something personal going on in your family\u2019s life. Topics such as discrimination, illness, addiction or violence, to name a few.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your young kids look to you for help in making sense of what is happening around them, and we know that can be challenging when we struggle to understand it ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite our best efforts, adults can not always shield children from traumatic events. We can, however, offer safe, predictable environments where children can ask questions, get real answers appropriate for their age and comfort when needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little ones need positive, nurturing experiences from caring adults to grow and thrive. It\u2019s necessary for their healthy development. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/topics\/journalism-facts\/talking-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has five tips to help parents and caregivers put things into perspective and search for answers together.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>1. Think about what you want to say.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advanced planning can make these tough discussions easier. It\u2019s OK to practice what you want to say in your head, to a mirror or with another adult. Find a quiet moment.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to find a time and place where your child can be the center of your attention. This one-on-one interaction will help build a foundation of healthy communication to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/first-things\/helping-your-child-deal-with-big-feelings\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help Your Child Deal with Big Feelings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>3. Find out what they know<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask them, \u201cWhat have you heard about&#8230;?\u201d and then listen. Listen.
