As temperatures in Arizona heat up, it\u2019s important to understand the lethal danger of leaving a child inside a locked car.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/road-safety\/child-safety\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> (NHTSA), heatstroke is one of the leading causes of non-crash-related fatalities among children. In 2018, 51 children died of heatstroke in hot cars across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>The inside of a vehicle can heat up to dangerous levels very quickly \u2014 more than 20 degrees in just ten minutes \u2014 and not just on a hot Arizona day. Even at an outside temperature of 60 degrees, the interior of a car can reach 110 degrees.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Look Before You Lock<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To avoid the potentially-tragic consequences of accidentally leaving a child in a hot car, the NHTSA offers the following recommendations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Never leave a child in a vehicle unattended.<\/li>\n<li>Cracking a window does not protect your child.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Make it a habit to always check the back seats of your vehicle before your lock it and walk away. Every time.<\/li>\n<li>Try keeping a stuffed animal or other noticeable object in your child\u2019s car seat when it\u2019s empty, and move it to the front seat as a visual reminder that your child is riding in the back. Make it part of your routine.<\/li>\n<li>If someone else is driving your child, or your daily routine has been altered, always check to make sure your child has arrived safely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-22208 size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Car_seat_Safety.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"393\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/child-safety\/preventing-heatstroke-what-do-if-you-see-child-alone-car\">what do to do if you see a child left alone in a car<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>If the child is not responsive or in distress:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Call 911.<\/li>\n<li>Get the child out of the car.<\/li>\n<li>Spray the child with cool water (not in an ice bath).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the child is responsive:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stay with the child until help arrives.<\/li>\n<li>Have someone else search for the driver or ask the facility to page them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As temperatures in Arizona heat up, it\u2019s important to understand the lethal danger of leaving a child inside a locked car.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14,"featured_media":22203,"template":"","tags":[87],"class_list":["post-22125","first-things","type-first-things","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tag-safety"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v25.8 (Yoast SEO v27.1.1) -
