So before you fire up the grill, light up a sparkler or settle in to watch a fireworks show, here are some things to keep in mind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fireworks Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) takes a strong position on fireworks safety. AAP urges families to \u201cavoid the use of consumer fireworks and to only enjoy displays of fireworks conducted by trained professionals,\u201d such as the many professional, public shows put on by cities, towns, festivals and other venues.<\/p>\n<p>(It\u2019s also worth noting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/story\/news\/local\/arizona\/2018\/06\/25\/3-cities-canceled-their-fourth-july-fireworks-show-due-fire-danger\/731974002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some Arizona cities have canceled their 4<sup>th<\/sup> of July show due to concern over fire danger<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>If you do choose to use fireworks at home, or you\u2019re attending a party where a neighbor or friend is planning to, the American Red Cross offers these important safety steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ftf-stg.magnetry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/fireworks-safety.jpg\" alt=\"fireworks safety\" width=\"560\" height=\"960\" \/>Never give fireworks to small children.<\/li>\n<li>Always follow the instructions on the packaging.<\/li>\n<li>Keep a supply of water close by as a precaution.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the person lighting fireworks wears eye protection.<\/li>\n<li>Light only one firework at a time and never attempt to relight &#8220;a dud.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Never throw or point a firework toward people, animals, vehicles, structures or flammable materials.<\/li>\n<li>Leave any area immediately where untrained amateurs are using fireworks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In agreement with the AAP, the Red Cross also states that \u201cthe safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend a public fireworks show put on by professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And as a reminder of the potential danger of some seemingly mild fireworks, according to FEMA, \u201csparklers alone account for one-quarter of emergency room fireworks injuries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer Safety Basics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even without fireworks, the 4<sup>th<\/sup> of July can be a busy day, so don\u2019t forget your usual summer safety basics. Be aware of too much sun exposure, and apply sunscreen regularly. Bringing along water for the whole family is a safe bet in the Arizona heat.
